On the tranquil Australian island of Tasmania, a peculiar visitor weighing nearly a ton is causing sleepless nights for local residents. This is Neil, a 5-year-old male elephant seal, dubbed "the most notorious seal on earth" for his incredibly boisterous antics, yet possessing millions of fans on TikTok.

After months of foraging in the deep ocean, Neil returned to the coastal towns of southern Tasmania, bringing with him both commotion and irresistible media attention.

With its massive body weighing nearly 1,000 kg, Neil's every move, though slow, possessed enough strength to crush sturdy fences. He nonchalantly lay across the road, paralyzing traffic, and even unhesitatingly crashed into parked cars.

These unruly behaviors have left locals both worried and on high alert, closely monitoring every move of this giant visitor.

Neil's appearance quickly exploded onto the virtual world , attracting over 1.4 million followers on TikTok – an astonishing number, double the entire population of Tasmania. Netizens enthusiastically viewed him as a symbol of rebellion, challenging all the rules of the human world.

However, according to experts, this destructive behavior is actually just a very natural training exercise for a seal in its adolescence. Sophia Volzke, an expert at the University of Tasmania, explains that practicing chest-butting is a necessary part of training for male elephant seals to learn how to compete for reproductive rights when they reach adulthood.

As the only male elephant seal to visit Tasmania in many years, Neil was completely solitary and had no peers to practice with. Therefore, he had to turn cars, fences, and surrounding infrastructure into simulated opponents for his training "battles" in preparation for adulthood.

Neil's excessive popularity is becoming a major concern for local authorities. Kris Carlyon of the Tasmanian Island Environment and Resources Agency noted that the seal's fame is a double-edged sword, especially when many adults carelessly bring their young children close enough to take souvenir photos, posing unforeseen risks to both sides.

Carlyon also warned of the risk that crowds could "love Neil to the point of killing him," recalling the heartbreaking lesson of Freya the walrus in Norway in 2023, whose death was also caused by an unsafe crowd of curious onlookers.

Moreover, this is an extremely harsh period for Neil, as up to 90% of male elephant seals do not survive past adolescence. If he is lucky enough to overcome this challenge and reach adulthood at around 10 years old, Neil could grow to be 5 meters long and weigh three times his current size.

Despite causing quite a bit of trouble, Neil still knows how to soothe the hearts of locals with incredibly funny moments. Sometimes, he'll calmly lie on the sidewalk, even affectionately cuddling an orange traffic cone in a puddle, creating a scene that both annoys and amuses the residents.

For many locals, this seal is considered the region's biggest "export" at the moment, and they have accepted learning to live peacefully with its presence.

In the future, as this giant visitor grows larger and will undoubtedly return more frequently, Tasmanian officials hope to find a harmonious solution that will allow humans and Neil to coexist safely.
